Good news for anyone checking out the recently-updated Porsche Cayenne lineup and thinking: "Hmmm. What this needs is a model with really, really, incredibly, stupid power output."

950Nm of torque, too

Well, your wish is Porsche's command - say hello to the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid and its 739hp.

No, that's not a typo. The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine and a 130kW electric motor add up to that power output, backed up by a colossal 950Nm of torque. Porsche claims the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid will accelerate to 100km/h from rest in just 3.7 seconds. We haven't driven it yet, but we have driven the Panamera with the previous Turbo E-Hybrid setup that produced 680hp, which felt like a machine capable of breaking physics.

Of course, as it is a plug-in hybrid, it will do some electric-only mileage. Quite a bit, actually, with Porsche claiming that a full charge of the 25.9kWh battery will give you a 73km electric range, rising to 82km if you're driving around town. The battery can be charged at 11kW, so it takes only two-and-a-half hours to charge from a suitable outlet.

Underneath, there's full air suspension with a new two-chamber, two-valve design that allows for constant adjustment of the suspension's reaction speeds. In fact, the layout means that the way that bumps are absorbed and the way the suspension then rebounds can be kept entirely separate, allowing for much more comfort and control and more difference between Comfort and Sport Plus driving modes.

SUV or Coupe models

There is Porsche Torque Vectoring as standard, which ensures that the wheels that can best handle the power get it. At the same time, you can optionally equip the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid with Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active suspension and rear-axle steering.

You can choose from the standard SUV body or the sleeker Coupe body, and both versions get bespoke Turbo styling at the front, with massive air intakes and glossy black paint for the airblades. At the back, there are brushed stainless steel exhaust tips, and you also get red brake calipers and standard Matrix LED headlights.

Inside, the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid gets the same upgraded interior as we saw in the rest of the updated Cayenne range recently, which includes new digital screens both for instruments and infotainment, as well as an optional third screen for the front-seat passenger.

There's a three-spoke 'GT' style steering wheel (heated, of course), which also has the rotary driving modes switch, Race-Tex material for the roof liner, and leather sports seats, which adjust 18-ways, electrically (14-way 'Comfort' seats are also available).

GT Package

If all that's not enough, there is the option of a GT package upgrade. That drops the suspension by 10mm, adds some bespoke suspension components (the pivot bearings, if you're asking), and wider front tyres for sharper turn-in. Ceramic-carbon brakes are standard for GT models, and you can optionally add 22-inch alloys.

There's no extra power, but the GT versions of the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid are nonetheless faster - 3.6 seconds 0-100km/h and a top speed that increases from 295km/h to 305km/h. You'll spot a GT model thanks to its black wheelarch extensions, carbon endplates for the rear-mounted wing, and centrally-mounted titanium exhaust pipes.
