The Chinese brand Denza is set to be launched in Ireland in 2024 following the European debut of its latest models at the recent IAA Mobility show in Munich. Denza is part of BYD, which was launched on the Irish market earlier this year and is the largest EV producer globally, with 1.9 million units manufactured in 2022. In Ireland BYD currently sells the Atto 3 and Dolphin and will soon launch the Seal as a direct rival to the Tesla Model 3.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Denza will be introduced to the Irish market early in 2024 and intends to launch six models by the end of the year. These will be positioned above the mainstream BYD brand, providing a more upmarket alternative to compete with established brands such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
While no official confirmation has been made, it is expected that the current importers of BYD, Motor Distributors Limited (which also holds the distribution rights for Mercedes-Benz in Ireland), could add Denza to its portfolio. Such a move could see the existing BYD dealer network have the option to take on the Denza brand, too, though its distributor could look beyond that growing network and pull in new retail partners as it looks to expand its commercial footprint.
Denza's electric models
Denza is a purely electric premium brand that currently produces three models. The Denza N7 is a sporty crossover with a 230kW (313hp) output and 0-100km/h acceleration of 3.9 seconds. In the Chinese 'CLTC' test it has a driving range of 702 kilometres, with 230kW rapid charging that can add 350 kilometres of range in 15 minutes.
A larger battery in the Denza N8 provides 1,030 kilometres (on the old NEDC cycle) of driving range. Its three-row interior can be set out as a six- or seven-seat configuration featuring higher-quality upholstery and premium equipment. The Denza D9 is a boxy full-size MPV that is a popular category of vehicle in Asia, coming with multiple seat configurations, including options that are aimed specifically at business users and the chauffeur market, with amenities such as a fridge unit, massaging functions and even a roof-mounted projector screen for watching movies or presentations.
What is Denza?
Denza is a premium electric car brand that was created in 2010 as a 50:50 joint venture between BYD and Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz. It launched its first concept car in China in 2012 and commenced production in 2014. In 2021, with Daimler increasing its relationship with Geely, the German company reduced its holding in Denza to 10 per cent. Denza has more than 103 stores throughout China and intends to launch in more European markets, including Ireland, in 2024.
