Jeep Ireland confirms plans for hybrid Avenger.

Jeep has announced a new hybrid version of its Avenger compact SUV, which is currently only available in electric form. The new e-Hybrid system will be offered in Ireland early next year, combining a 1.2-litre petrol engine with an electric motor.

Electric power

The Avenger's hybrid system uses the Stellantis Group's new 'e-DCS6' twin-clutch, six-speed automatic gearbox, incorporating the electric motor. That motor produces 21kW, or 29hp, and can drive the wheels without assistance from the petrol engine at speeds of up to 30km/h and for distances of up to 1km, allowing the petrol engine to burn less fuel when it's at its least efficient - around town.

But that isn't the only hybrid system at play. The 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine incorporates 48-volt mild-hybrid tech, too, allowing the engine to switch off earlier when coasting to a halt, improving efficiency. According to Jeep, the two systems combine to allow a 15-per-cent reduction in CO2 emissions compared with a combustion engine with an automatic gearbox. In practice, that means the Avenger e-Hybrid will emit between 111- and 114 grams of carbon dioxide every kilometre travelled. It also allows the car to get from 0-100km/h in 11 seconds, should the need arise.

More features

The propulsion system isn't the only new feature of the Avenger e-Hybrid, either. Jeep also offers the car with the Open Air Sky Roof, which retracts to offer an open-air experience for drivers and passengers. And the car will be offered with a power-operated driving seat with a massage function.

What's more, the e-Hybrid will be differentiated by a new logo, while there's also a standard seven-inch e-Hybrid digital instrument display. However, customers can replace that with a 10.25-inch instrument cluster if they so please. Gear shift paddles are fitted to the rear of the steering wheel, too.

Otherwise, the Avenger e-Hybrid will come with a choice of three trim levels, named Longitude, Altitude and Summit, much like the electric Avenger. And there's the usual selection of colours and trim options.

Eric Laforge, head of the Jeep brand in Europe, said: "Jeep's history of versatile vehicles embodies the freedom of choice for customers, reflecting the Brand's commitment to diversity in its expanded vehicle lineup. The new Avenger e-Hybrid represents the first step to electrification as an eco-friendly vehicle, intentionally crafted and promoted as an inclusive choice for a wide spectrum of customers, who are still looking for capability, style, state-of-the-art technology and comfort in a compact dimension."
