MG Ireland announces pricing and specifications for MG4 XPower and MG4 Extended Range.

MG has announced prices for its new high-performance XPower version of the MG4 EV, which comes in at €42,995. The 435hp 'hot' electric hatchback will go on sale from December 1, alongside the new Extended Range model, which offers a larger battery than the existing Long Range versions. Although it's less powerful, the Extended Range model will cost exactly the same as its more potent sibling.

Two new models

The MG4 EV XPower, which uses two electric motors to offer all-wheel drive, 435hp and a 0-100km/h time of less than four seconds, joins the range with a 64kWh battery, offering an official range of 385km. We've already driven a right-hand-drive example of the XPower, which is set apart by its orange brake callipers and chrome side detailing, ahead of the first customer deliveries during the first quarter of 2024.

At the same time - and for the same €42,995 asking price - MG is also offering customers a more economy-orientated version of the popular electric hatchback in the Extended Range model. As the name suggests, it swaps the 64kWh battery used in the Long Range and XPower models with a larger 77kWh battery, enabling it to cover more than 500km on a single charge. In order to achieve that, however, it makes do with just the one electric motor, which sends 245hp to the rear wheels alone.

This high-end MG4 EV will be offered solely in top-of-the-range Exclusive specification, providing a full suite of features including driver assistance technology, satellite navigation and climate control. The Extended Range model also gets rapid charging technology that allows the battery to be topped up from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 39 minutes, assuming the conditions and the charging point are suitable.

The price is right

As well as adding two new models to the range, MG has also announced a new offer for the forthcoming '241' number plate, allowing buyers of certain electric MG vehicles to save €2,500. The offer applies to MG5 EV and MG ZS models, as well as Standard Range and Long Range (but not XPower or Extended Range) versions of the MG4 EV. The limited-time offer also includes vehicles acquired on finance, with MG offering finance packages with interest rates starting from 2.9 per cent APR.

Mean, green driving machine

For those that take MG up on the offer of €2,500 off an MG5 EV, there's added peace of mind from the Green NCAP independent emissions assessment programme. The electric estate has been awarded a five-star rating - the highest available - for its efficiency and life-cycle emissions.

The test, which looks at air quality, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions during a vehicle's lifetime, gave the MG5 EV an overall score of 95 per cent, putting the electric estate among the five cleanest models tested in 2023. Naturally, the battery-electric car scored full marks in the clean air tests, before achieving 92 per cent for efficiency and 95 per cent for greenhouse gases. As a result, Green NCAP granted the MG a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) award for emissions - only the second time the award has been granted this year.
