At the launch of the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class recently, insiders confirmed that the compact MPV's platform would be used to front an entirely new range of cars. Along with the A-Class, the B-Class's underpinnings will spin off models as varied as a coupé and an SUV.
Sources within Mercedes claim that a 'mini CLS' four-door coupé based on the platform will be available by 2014, while a compact SUV and another hatchback model are also mooted.
The variety of models is aided by Mercedes-Benz ditching the expensive, twin-floored platform of the B-Class's predecessor. They'll make up as many as five of the ten new models that Mercedes-Benz's CEO Dr Z promises in the next five years.
Determined to establish itself as the world's no.1 premium car maker Mercedes is planning a tough product offensive, seeking volume in smaller model categories.
