Peugeot has revealed the new E-5008, an all-electric replacement for its big-selling seven-seat family SUV. It's essentially a taller, longer variant of the just-launched E-3008 and will come packing a potential 661km one-charge range.
503km range for smaller battery
That will be for the big-battery model, which will have a 98kWh battery pack and a 210hp electric motor. The same motor can also be paired with a 73kWh battery, allowing for a 503km range. There will also be a two-motor, 320hp version, which, with the same 73kWh battery pack, gets the same 503km range.
The electric E-5008 will have AC charging of up to 22kW (11kW is standard) and 160kW on DC rapid charging power. A 20-80 per cent charge takes 30 minutes, and Peugeot claims that at maximum power, the E-5008 can add 100km of extra range in just 10 minutes.
For those of you still feeling battery-phobic, there will also be a mild-hybrid petrol version of the 5008 with the 136hp 1.2-litre turbo petrol three-cylinder engine, for which Peugeot claims an average fuel economy of 5.8 litres per 100km. There will also be a plug-in hybrid version with a 92kW electric motor and sufficient battery capacity to allow for up to 80km of electric-only running.
The E-5008 is built on the Stellantis Group's new STLA-M (M for Medium) platform, which means it has a lengthy 2.9-metre wheelbase. At 4.79 metres long and 1.69 metres high, it's a little longer and taller than the E-3008. Instead of that car's sharply sloping tailgate, it has a boxier rear end to maximise cabin and luggage space.
Pixel LED headlights
There is a clear stylistic kinship between this E-5008 and the E-3008. Like the smaller car, the E-5008 gets high-tech Pixel LED headlights for higher-end models. It'll come with either 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels and will be available in six colours: Obsession Blue, Ingaro Blue, Okenite White, Nera Black, Cumulus Grey, and Titane Grey. GT models will get two-tone paint featuring a contrasting black roof.
Inside, the E-5008 also shares the big, sweeping 21-inch display screen with the E-3008. This incorporates both the driver's instruments and the central infotainment screen and sweeps in a single curved unit from the driver's door to the centre of the dash. All of the climate controls are on the screen, as with other controls, but Peugeot says that the screen layout is fully customisable to make for easier operation. As with other recent Peugeot models, there are short-cut 'i-Toggle' touchscreen buttons, which can also be customised according to your preference. Behind the small steering wheel are new column stalks and paddle shifters which control the levels of regenerative braking for the all-electric models.
There's wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Peugeot is incorporating ChatGPT artificial intelligence tech into its 'OK, Peugeot' voice control system.
Full seven-seater
In the rear of the cabin, the back seats slide back and forth in a split 60:40 formation, but the seat backs split in three, 40:20:40, for folding flat. The sliding function makes it easier to access the third-row seats, which now fold flat into the floor (unlike those of the old 5008, which had to be removed to get the biggest boot space). With all seats in use, boot space stands at 259 litres, which is actually an improvement on the old 5008, but with the third row folded, the boot volume is 748 litres - while that's still pretty big, it's slightly less than you got in the old car. Fold all the seats flat; you get 1,815 litres of space and a flat 2.0-metre floor.
Those in row three also have up to 80 litres of storage space around their seats. When not in use, the luggage cover can be stashed under the boot floor. There are also multiple USB-C and 12-volt power outlets.
For comfort, the (optional, high-spec) front seats have been given the prestigious AGR (Aktion Gesunder Rücken) seal of approval. The German Association of Doctors and Therapists certifies these seats, and there's also an air quality control system.
All E-5008 models will get a reversing camera as standard, while a 360-degree surround camera system is optional. Peugeot says the new car has more than 40 driver assistance systems, including the Drive Assist Plus 2.0 option, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, traffic jam assist, semi-automatic lane change, and advanced speed limit recognition.
Connected services include a journey planner that automatically picks the best charging spots for longer runs. Of course, the car connects to the MyPeugeot phone app for remote functions.
Recycled materials
As well as being a (mostly) electric model, the new E-5008 and 5008 include more than 500kg of 'green' materials throughout, including 'green' steel and aluminium, which make up 60 per cent of the total mass of such materials used. More than 30 plastic parts are used with recycled plastic in bumpers, deflectors, storage bins, and carpets. Peugeot has also cut down on the number of exterior decorative trim parts, and has rowed back on the use of chrome.
For now, the E-5008 will be offered in either Allure or GT trims. Allue includes half 'vegan-leather' trim, a 21-inch curved screen, ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, keyless entry, a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, LED headlights, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
GT models will get a contrast black roof, Alcantara suede upholstery, 20-inch alloys, Pixel LED headlights, front parking sensors, an electric tailgate with hands-free function, heated front seats and steering wheel, and adaptive cruise control with stop-start traffic jam assist.
The E-5008 is expected to go on sale in Ireland in the last quarter of this year, and prices and final specifications will be issued by Gowan Auto (which is the Peugeot importer for Ireland) closer to the on-sale date.
