Toyota bZ3C and bZ3X are designed to cater for Chinese customers.

Toyota has revealed two new China-centric electric vehicles at this week’s Beijing motor show, although it is not known whether the cars will come to market in Europe. The new bZ3C coupe-SUV and bZ3X family SUV are both orientated towards the Chinese market, and will go on sale over there later this year.

Carbon neutrality

Revealed as part of Toyota’s “pathway to achieving carbon neutrality,” the two new models have similar design cues, including the swooping headlight design, but they fill slightly different briefs.

The bZ3C is touted as a “dynamic and distinctive” crossover with features that “create a fun space” for younger customers. With its sharp lines and sporty roofline, the fastback bZ3C is expected to rival cars such as the Volvo C30, but it’s kitted out with a clean and minimalist cabin centred around a massive touchscreen.

On the other hand, the bZ3X is more of a family-orientated option, with a “large interior space” based on the concept of “a mobile ‘cozy home’.” More upright than the bZ3C and with a more SUV-like profile, the bZ3X gets a light and airy interior with a huge panoramic glass roof and armchair-esque seating.

Beyond revealing the cars’ design and interiors, though, Toyota has remained tight-lipped about any technical specifications.

“Experience value”

Even so, Toyota has confirmed both cars will be amply equipped, with the latest driver assistance technology and “smart cockpits” with a range of digital displays. The Japanese brand has also promised safety and comfort, along with what Toyota calls “experience value.” Whatever that might be.

Speaking at the launch of the two new models in Beijing, Toyota’s executive vice-president and chief technology officer, Hiroki Nakajima, said the cars were built specifically for the Chinese market and had been built in collaboration with Chinese partners, casting doubt on whether the electric models will come to Europe at any point.

"What kind of BEV would bring smiles to the faces of our Chinese customers?” asked Nakajima in his press conference in Beijing. “Working with our partners in China, this quest led us to the bZ3C and the bZ3X.”
