Irish motorists support the newly reduced drink drive limit that finally brings us into line with the rest of Europe according to a poll carried out by AA Ireland. The survey, carried out last year, revealed that over 80 per cent of those questioned were in favour of the reduction from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg.
For the average person, the new limit is equivalent to drinking less than a pint, but with it comes changes in the penalties for those caught over the limit. For the first time those caught just over the limit will not automatically lose their licence, instead receiving a €200 on-the-spot fine and three penalty points.
The AA believes that the use of a lesser punishment, for drivers above 50- but below 80mg, is a sensible and practical measure.
"Drivers who are just above the limit - perhaps because they still have alcohol in their system from the night before - are dangerous and will be breaking the law, but in fairness it must be acknowledged that this is not the same as the deliberate drunk driver." says Director of Policy Conor Faughnan.
Under the new regime a lower 20mg limit has been introduced for inexperienced motorists and professional drivers, including taxi drivers and hauliers.
