Euro NCAP has revealed the results of its latest batch of crash tests, including the first pick-up to earn the top score. This round covered the Audi Q3, BMW 1 Series, Chevrolet Captiva, Fiat Freemont, Ford Ranger, Hyundai Veloster, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Opel Astra and Opel Zafira Tourer, Chrysler's 300C and Voyager and the Toyota Yaris.
The Ford Ranger managed to earn five stars, a considerable improvement on the two stars awarded to the 2008 Ranger. Changes to the front end on the new pick-up make it 'softer' and more energy absorbing, earning 81% for pedestrian protection, the highest score ever recorded for a pick-up. As well as raising the bar for vehicles of its type the Ford was one of the safest cars tested.
Good scores for pedestrian protection were also awarded to the BMW 1 Series, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Toyota Yaris; all achieving more than 60%. From 2012 this will be the lower limit for a five-star rating.
Cars that scored less than 50% for pedestrian safety include the Chevrolet Captiva, Hyundai Veloster and Chrysler Voyager. The Voyager scored poorly overall with ratings of 78% for adult and 67% for child occupant safety - earning four stars. However, the Hyundai provided the highest levels of adult and child protection with scores of 96% and 89% respectively.
The Fiat Freemont, Mercedes M-Class, Chrysler 300C and Chrysler Voyager were fitted with active bonnets to improve pedestrian safety. Sensors detect when a pedestrian has been struck and actuators lift the bonnet away from the hard engine underneath. However, Euro NCAP says there is still room for improvement.
Other features of the cars tested that attracted comment included the body stability and seatbelt protection of the Opel Astra GTC and Opel Zafira Tourer. BMW's Assist Advanced eCall, which automatically contacts the emergency services, was also singled out.
