Cupra teases new Terramar SUV

New Cupra Terramar mid-size SUV will be revealed in full next week.

Cupra, the performance and electric brand spun off from SEAT, is giving us a final tease of the new Terramar mid-size SUV ahead of its full unveiling next week.

Haven’t we already seen the Terramar?

Sort of, yes. Cupra did display a motor-show model badged as Terramar a while back, but even though it did sort Cupra’s new, more angular ‘family face’, it would seem that the car has undergone some styling changes since. To keep us interested in the interim, here’s a heavily cropped photo showing off one of the Terramar’s complex-looking brake lights.

What do we know about the Terramar?

We do know that it will be a mid-size family SUV, so a competitor to the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Nissan Qashqai. There may be a seven-seat version - Cupra did previously confirm that the seven-seat SEAT Tarraco had been taken out of production to make room for the Terramar - but that’s not confirmed yet.

What about an electric version?

Nope, there won’t be a fully-electric Terramar. In fact, the Terramar is due to be the last car that Cupra launches that comes with combustion power, although that might yet be revised in the face of continuing buyer apathy when it comes to electric cars. For now, the Terramar will launch with a choice of petrol power in the form of the familiar 1.5-litre TSI turbo 150hp engine and plug-in hybrid models, which should have enough battery capacity to go for 100km on electric power alone.

Anything else?

The Terramar will be fully revealed at an event on the fringes of the America’s Cup yacht race, of which Cupra is a partner and takes place in the brand’s hometown of Barcelona. Oh, and the Terramar name is taken from a racing track in Sitges, just outside Barcelona, the location for the Cupra brand’s first announcement.
