MG has teased a new all-electric SUV that’s going to be revealed in full this spring, and it’s going to be called the MGS5.
Does that fit into MG’s existing naming policy?
Not quite, as the extra ‘S’ is an odd one. However, it’s clearly to differentiate this electric SUV from the existing MG5 zero-emission estate. It’s also going to replace the ageing ZS EV in the line-up; while the petrol and hybrid ZS models are an all-new design, the electric version has been around since 2017 and is due for retirement.
What do we know about the technical side of things?
Not a huge amount, but MG has confirmed that the S5 SUV will be on the same modular scalable platform as the existing MG4 electric hatchback, which supports the idea that this will be the ZS EV’s replacement - placing the newcomer in the more affordable C-segment of the marketplace - and will separate the electric SUV from the petrol and hybrid ones by virtue of a different model badge. MG claims that the S5 will have strong dynamics, both in and out of town, and that it will provide ‘superb range’, which suggests a good-sized battery and maybe something like 500km of one-shot driving capability, eclipsing the 440km of the outgoing ZS EV. The Chinese-owned company also says that the MGS5 will showcase a new cabin design complete with ‘advanced and premium features’ but that it will retain its focus on its highly competitive value - the MG ZS Hybrid+ costs from €28,995, so hopefully, the MGS5 might come in at considerably less than €40,000 when prices are confirmed.
Anything else to add?
Over to David Allison from MG Motor, who said: “The MGS5 EV has all the credentials to impress - a generously equipped and spacious SUV but with the all-electric performance that MG customers enjoy so much. In terms of cabin ambience and technology, this model will offer a new and greatly enhanced MG experience.” Full details of the impending MGS5 SUV will be released in the coming weeks, and we’ll bring them to you as and when we have them.
