The ESB is going to partner with car-sharing scheme providers GoCar and Yuko (which is part of Toyota) to establish three EV-sharing hubs in Ireland.
Where will these hubs be?
The initial three hubs will be located in the Dublin area, in Malahide, Sandyford Business Park, and Swords. The councils of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and Fingal are also supporting the project.
How many EVs at each hub?
Each hub will have two EVs available for shared use and a charging point. The vehicles located at the hubs will be a part of the regular GoCar and Yuko fleets, so they'll be bookable and useable through the existing apps for those businesses.
The aim is to make electric vehicle use more accessible and affordable, especially for those who cannot currently afford to buy a new EV or for those who cannot get a charging point installed at home.
'Reduce carbon footprint'
Donal Phelan, Head of Innovation, ESB Group, said: “Adopting cleaner technologies and sustainable practices can greatly reduce the transportation sector's carbon footprint and make a substantial impact on our journey towards a net zero future. We are delighted to be working with Fingal County Council and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to develop these innovative eHubs at prime locations in Dublin to aid in the promotion of sustainable transportation options. By providing convenient access to shared EVs, these eHubs will encourage more residents and businesses to opt for sustainable travel solutions.”
Cllr Jim O'Leary, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said: “We are proud to announce the launch of a new electric car share scheme in Sandyford Business District, in partnership with ESB, Go Car, and Yuko. This initiative directly supports our Climate Action Plan 2024-2029, which champions the expansion of EV car sharing. With its concentration of over 1,000 businesses, 26,000 employees, and 6,000 residents, Sandyford Business District is the ideal location to pilot this sustainable transport solution.”
Cllr Brian McDonagh, Mayor of Fingal, said: “Fingal County Council is proud to fully support the eHubs pilot project, which provides our community with an accessible pathway to electric transportation while promoting a cleaner, greener future. This initiative not only supports sustainable energy solutions but also strengthens the connections within our community, paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future for generations to come.”
