Good news for owners of Android smartphones with the announcement that the TomTom local search app, TomTom Places, is now available for download from the Android Market.
The app is based on TomTom's database of 10 million points of interest and allows users to search for nearby shops, hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions. The Android app is available in Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and The Netherlands with Spain being added to the list this month (December 2011).
"With Android's market share reaching over 50% in most countries we have significantly increased our reach", says Lucien Groenhuijzen, Managing Director TomTom Places.
Unfortunately TomTom Places does not provide turn-by-turn navigation so will not replace a dedicated satnav unit - but then again that is what Google Maps Navigation is for!
