Nissan's sleeker Pathfinder

Slipperier styled, more sophisticated Pathfinder concept shows a new direction for Nissan's big SUV.

Nissan pulled a vast sheet off the concept Pathfinder at Detroit this week showing how the next generation model will look. Sleek new looks dictate something of a change in direction for the big 4x4, as does Nissan's switch from pick-up truck based body-on-frame construction to a more sophisticated uni-body. That does mean it's not likely to be as down and dirty, but the trade-off will be a less crude drive and greater economy thanks to huge weight savings.

Even in such a gargantuan seven-seat machine fuel economy is important, with the concept powered by a 3.5-litre V6 rather than the more usual V8 engine. Nissan claims the new unit gives fuel economy improvements of 25%. That more efficient engine will drive either the front or all four wheels through a CVT automatic transmission with six stepped modes in manual mode. Obviously we'd only get a diesel version in Ireland if it came here.

Despite its sleeker appearance interior space is greater than its predecessor thanks to the new body's better packaging. If you're in the US you can pick one up from Nissan dealers this Autumn, or if you want a posher version Infiniti's JX relation adds some glitzier looks and a higher quality interior.
