News just coming out of Germany confirms that the five-door version of Volkswagen's new city car, the up!, will go on sale later this year. Initially the new model will enter service in its home market on March 6 with the rest of Europe following on early in the summer.
In Germany the five-door variant will have a starting price of €10,325, a mere €475 premium over the three-door car, and Volkswagen expects the it to account for more than fifty per cent of up! sales. Prices for the Irish market have yet to be released.
The up! five-door will be offered with the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine as its three-door sibling with power outputs of 60- or 75hp, while the imaginatively titled trim levels of take up!, Move up!, High up!, Black up!, White up! will also be carried over.
Visually the only change over the three-door model, bar the addition of two extra doors, is a lowering of the rear window line. Passengers in the back will benefit from a raised seating position to allow a clear view out and despite the up!'s diminutive proportions have ample legroom with 789mm on hand.
CompleteCar.ie will be driving the five-door up! later this week so watch out for the full report.
