Official: Volvo V40

Following the leaked information we now have the official Volvo V40 details.

We've already seen the leaked pictures and now Volvo has released official information on its forthcoming V40, set to be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on the 6th March.

It clearly has high hopes for its stylish new premium hatchback, expecting to sell 90,000 worldwide, with 85 per cent of those earmarked for European shores. The sleek new look, with inspiration clearly drawn from the 1970's P1800ES, will ensure that it stands out in the marketplace. Inside, there's a new graphic instrument cluster that can be customised to the owner's tastes and a driver-centric layout.

Of course it wouldn't be a Volvo without a healthy nod to safety, and the V40 features an array of new or updated technologies. From the world's first pedestrian airbag system to the revised Pedestrian Detection system with full auto brake (which now works at speeds of up to 50km/h), the firm believes the new V40 will be the safest in its class, leading to a full score on the new Euro NCAP tests.

It also expects to lead the way in dynamics, with a chassis designed specifically to feel connected to the driver and offer agility. There's a choice of engines, starting with a 94g/km diesel and culminating in a turbocharged T5 petrol unit. The latter boasts 254hp and can sprint from 0-100km/h in only 6.7 seconds. Regardless of whether fitted with automatic or manual transmissions, all engines come with stop-start and brake energy regeneration.

Production will start in May of this year, so it won't be long until we're used to seeing Volvo's prettiest car yet. It arrives in Ireland in August.
