Geneva 2012: Hyundai i20

Updated hatch boasts cleanest conventional engine on the market.

What is it?

The freshly facelifted Hyundai i20 would probably not attract a huge amount of attention by itself, not with launches of one-off Lamborghinis and hideous Bentley SUVs taking place, but Hyundai has gone to town on the tech, specifically the green tech. Hyundai claims that its new 1.1-litre, three-cylinder 'U-II' diesel emits just 84g/km, the lowest figure offered by a conventional engine. Even the 1.4-litre 90hp engine emits less than 100g/km.

Why's it here?

Europe is the home of the supermini; they may be offered in different markets, but the segment is the bread and butter of European motoring. So if Hyundai can make the i20 work here it can make it work anywhere. It also helps that Europe has some of the most stringent emissions rules so the U-II engine is ideally suited to the market.

Show stopper or floor filler?

If the new U-II diesel engine was displayed on its own with a big flashing neon sign telling the world about its green virtues it would probably attract a crowd in itself. Shoehorn that engine into a car with a fresh face and we expect the Hyundai stand to be reasonably busy.
