A tyre that has been designed to work on the moon. Sounds like the kind of over-the-top brag someone would make down the pub but that is exactly what the latest Goodyear tyre has been designed to do.
The 'Spring Tyre' was developed in conjunction with The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (or NASA as you and I know it) and is said to represent a future tyre concept that could be used to explore the outer reaches of space. As the name suggests the Spring Tyre replaces the wire mesh of previous 'moon' tyres with 800 load bearing springs that make the tyres extremely durable and energy efficient.
As anybody who has suffered a tyre blow-out having collided with a pothole will attest to modern road tyres really are not up to the rough and tumble of driving around the craters of the moon. By doing away with the air and fitting springs that will rebound after tyre deformation Goodyear sees the Spring Tyre as not only the answer to space exploration but also the answer to exploring parts of the earth where current tyres cannot go.
Can we get a set in 225/45 R18 please?
