Mercedes-Benz has enhanced the G-Wagen

Updates for the Mercedes G-Class include an interior upgrade and a 544hp AMG derivative.

Just when you think time must be up for the G-Wagen, Mercedes-Benz goes ahead and releases another updated version. The 2012 G-Class (as it is officially called) features a significantly enhanced interior, minor tweaks on the outside and new engines.

The exterior updates are limited to new door mirrors and LED daytime running lights, unless you go for the new G 63 AMG version, which adds a bespoke grille, deeper bumpers, 20-inch alloy wheels and red brake callipers.

Inside you'll find a redesigned instrument pack and centre console. Between the speedo and rev counter is a new colour display screen, though there's a larger screen - just like the new B-Class's - mounted high in the centre console. It's part of the 'COMAND Online' system, which includes Bluetooth, internet access and satnav as standard. Other detail trim changes bring the G-Class in line with the rest of the Mercedes-Benz range.

A G 53 AMG variant joins the G 350 BlueTec diesel model in the line-up. It's powered by the company's twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8, which produces up to 544hp and 760Nm, the latter all the way from 2,000- to 5,000rpm.

As ever the G-Wagen will remain a special order vehicle for the Irish market.
