Toyota still the nation's favourite car brand - just

Volkswagen takes top spot in April and is snapping at Toyota's heels.

Toyota has been at the top of the sales charts in Ireland for as long as anybody can remember, but it looks like its position as the nation's favourite car brand may be coming to and end. With 867 registrations racked up in April Volkswagen is now snapping at Toyota's heels.

Those monthly registrations equate to a market share of 12.9 per cent for Volkswagen and means that, despite accumulated registrations of 13,275, only 221 units separate Toyota and Volkswagen.

"We are delighted with our performance during April and credit must go to our dealership network and their exceptional efforts," commented John Donegan, Head of Sales and Marketing for Volkswagen Ireland. "With a gap of just 200 registrations between Volkswagen Ireland and top spot we will be doing our utmost to continue this strong performance in the second quarter of 2012 and maximise a strong order bank."

Volkswagen Ireland's strong performance is against the backdrop of an overall motoring industry that year-to-date is 7.2 % down on 2011 with April down 22% on April 2011.
