Electric car charging possible in 15 mins?

A new connector aims to bring the EV charge time down to as low as 15 minutes.

Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen have lent their support to a standardised, single-port fast charging system. Called DC-fast charging with a Combined Charging System, it integrates four electricity connections and aims to become a worldwide standard.

The system integrates single-phase AC, fast three-phase AC, DC-charging at home and ultra-fast DC-charging at public stations into one vehicle inlet. By offering a combined, standardised connector that works with most existing charging stations it is hoped to establish a standardised infrastructure. Compatible vehicles could be charged in as little as 15-20 minutes.

A collaborative review of existing charging strategies, the ergonomics of the connector and customer preferences in Europe and the US shaped the design. Common broadband communication methods have been built in to support future smart grid developments.

Combined charging stations are expected to be available later this year. The first vehicles using the system will be launched in 2013.
