A mere twelve months after the MP4-12C went on sale McLaren has announced the second car for its fledging road car programme. Shown via a single teaser image the new car is, somewhat unsurprisingly, the long mooted Spider version of the MP4-12C.
At this point little is known about the car. McLaren says that more information will be forthcoming in the next few days. What we do know that is that the Spider will sport the range of revisions that have recently been applied to the MP4-12C coupé. That means it will be powered by a 620hp twin turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 engine, which should mean a 0-100km/h time of just over three seconds and a top speed hovering around the 320km/h mark.
The teaser image sent out does not reveal anything about the workings of the roof mechanism or even whether it will be a soft or hard top affair but Autocar and CAR magazines both report that it will feature a tri-folding hard top possibly sourced from German roof specialists Webasto.
We expect to see the McLaren MP4-12C Spider before the end of the year carrying a price tag close to that currently commanded by the Ferrari 458 Spider.
