Aston Martin has (finally some might say) launched an open version of its V12 Vantage. Apparently it wasn't just a case of shoehorning the V12 engine into the engine bay and cutting some extra holes in the bonnet. Who knew? Anyway, it's here now, looks mighty and promises to sound even better.
Exterior
We forget how long ago it was that the V12 Vantage coupé was launched, but it hasn't lost an ounce of its allure, arguably still the best-looking car Aston Martin makes. The open Vantage has always vied with it for that honour so the V12 Vantage Roadster is a match made in heaven. Saying that, the new model has a few unique features, such as a pronounced rear boot 'flip' spoiler and lower splitter at the front to keep the car on the ground at speed. The splitter is constructed from hand-made carbon fibre weave, which is also used in the rear diffuser, side strakes, mirror caps and even in the rear lights. A new design of forged alloy wheel and Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres as standard top it all off.
Interior
There's less to tell you about the interior. It features a six-speed manual gear lever, as in the coupé, and Aston Martin has thrown in a few new glass switches. If you've not had enough carbon fibre you can specify it for various parts of the cabin too.
Mechanicals
As mentioned above, a manual gearbox is the only transmission option. It sends power to the rear wheels from the mighty 6.0-litre V12 engine. Peak power of 517hp is produced at 6,500rpm, with maximum torque of 570Nm at 5,750rpm. Pressing the Sport button, throttle response is sharper with more torque delivered early in the pedal travel. Along with that, exhaust system bypass valves open for longer so you can hear more of the V12 engine at work more of the time. Needless to say the 'up' button for the roof is superfluous.
Anything else?
Preliminary performance figures suggest a top speed of 305km/h and a 0-100km/h time of just 4.5 seconds. The V12 Vantage Roadster is on sale right now.
