Happy birthday Ford Cortina!

Ireland's Cortina Club celebrates the model's 50th anniversary.

On the weekend of the 7th September, some 70 Ford Cortinas will be converging on Roscarbery, West Cork in celebration of the Cortina's 50th anniversary.

Named after the Italian Alpine ski resort, Cortina d'Amprezzo, the model was first introduced in Ireland in 1962 as a successor to the popular Consul.  During its lifespan, five different models were produced - Mk I through V - and it was discontinued after 20 years in 1982 due to the launch of the Sierra.  Following the release of the Cortina Mk III in 1970, the car remained Ireland's most popular model for more than a decade; and outsold every other model between 1972 and 1981.

"The beauty of the car was that it was so easy to work on," says John Noel Cronin, Treasurer of the Cortina Club of Ireland - the organisation putting on the event.  "Just about every mechanical part unbolts; meaning you can turn even the saddest model into a roadworthy classic."

Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director for Ford Ireland said, "The Cortina is truly an iconic Ford.  It was such a common sight, loved by motorists for its modern new design and great driving ability."  It was this great driving ability that gave the Cortina the edge in the racing and rallying circles it was hugely successful in during the '60s and '70s.

The venue for the 50th celebrations will be the Celtic Ross Hotel, Roscarbery from 7th - 9th September.  Television Company TG4 is also marking the event, with screening dates for the programme scheduled for December.
