The Peugeot 208 offensive looks to continue unabated as news arrives that the XY concept, first shown in Geneva, will join the 208 GTi at the Paris Motor Show. The range topping XY is said to be the most luxurious interpretation of the 208 family and will do battle with Citroen's DS3 and the MINI.
Exterior
As the range topping model the XY gets pinstriped 17-inch alloys, oodles of chrome, 'XY' signatures and purple highlighting for the Peugeot lion. Available in six colours, the XY marks the introduction of the new purple hue depicted in the accompanying images. Personalisation will be key in the XY and among the items available are roof decals to separate your XY from the flock.
Interior
Purple and chrome feature inside too with Peugeot's new favourite colour making an appearance in stitching for the upholstery while chrome embellishments feature on the door trims and dashboard. No two XYs are likely to be the same though with buyers free to choose between Nappa leather in black or bronze, Nappa leather paired with Alcantara and optional extras like heated seats, panoramic roof and dual-zone air conditioning.
As the range topper the XY comes generously equipped in its own right with a leather multifunction steering wheel, seven-inch touchscreen, USB and Bluetooth connectivity and a six-speaker stereo system - though the Irish specification has yet to be confirmed.
Mechanicals
As the most exclusive 208 the XY does away with some of the lesser engine offerings; the line-up begins with a 92hp 1.6-litre e-HDi diesel that emits 98g/km. Available with either a five-speed manual gearbox or six-speed EGC auto this is also joined by a 115hp version with a six-speed manual that returns 99g/km. Petrol purists can opt for either the 120hp 1.6-litre VTi with a five-speed manual or the hotter 156hp turbocharged THP engine that still only emits 135g/km. Again, availability of all engines has not been confirmed by Peugeot Ireland.
Anything else?
The Peugeot 208 XY is due to go on sale in spring 2013 and will be available in either three- or five-door forms. Once we know the Irish situation we'll pass it on.
