Fast estates are no stranger to Volvo, but this is the first time we've seen a truly hot hatch from the firm. Hot on the heels of the announcement that the firm's V40 is the safest car tested by Euro NCAP it looks like it'll also be the fastest looking model in Volvo's range thanks to the introduction of the R-Design package.
Exterior
Launched in Rebel Blue the V40 gets a metal framed grille, rear diffuser with twin exhaust pipes and five-spoke diamond cut alloy wheels (either in 17- or 18-inch diameter).
Interior
Inside, the seats are trimmed in black Nubuck and textured leather with the R-Design logo embroidered into the headrests, the pedals finished in alloy and the dashboard inlays in aluminium. The acclaimed interactive dashboard display is now presented in the performance flagship's signature blue.
Mechanicals
Available across the range of engines, the R-Design also comes with a Sport Chassis option. Lowered by 10mm with firmer springs and shocks than the Dynamic set up, it also uses mono-tube rear dampers for quicker responses and uprated anti-roll bars to keep the V40 in control at high speeds.
Anything else?
Volvo will give the V40 R-Design its world debut at this month's Paris Motor Show - opening on September 27. It's not the only V40-flavoured new car there, though you'll have to wait until next week to hear about the other...
