Land Rover has used the recently launched Airstream 684 Series 2 trailer to demonstrate the towing ability of its new Range Rover.
The demonstration began at Airstream's European base in the Lake District and finished up on top of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. The rig was then turned around and driven back again, creating a 5,915-kilometre journey that was completed in 11 days. The route was planned to include various key locations such as the Land Rover factory in the UK, the beach near Casablanca and the race track at Marrakesh where Land Rover was based for the launch of the new Range Rover.
The car of choice for the journey was a top-spec Autobiography model fitted with the 336hp SDV8 engine to tow the 2,399kg Airstream. Ben Samuelson, whose company Samuelson Wylie Associates planned and ran the trip, said, "The new Range Rover's towing ability is nothing short of stunning. It pulled the two and a half tonne Airstream like it simply wasn't there."
"Half way through Spain, we encountered horrendous side winds, the type that sees articulated trucks tipped onto their side, but the Range Rover's Trailer Stability Assist meant that any sway in the trailer was dealt with before it ever started," commented Samuelson.
He also compared the new Airstream to a moving luxury boutique hotel, finishing off by saying, "I think we proved that luxury and adventure are not mutually exclusive."
