Alfa Romeo 4C: the finished product

Alfa Romeo reveals interior of 4C - and a lot more besides.

With a week to go to the Geneva Motor Show Alfa Romeo has released more details of the mid-engined 4C sports car. This is our first chance to see what the interior looks like. Even better, the new model is due to go on sale later this year.

Exterior
Nothing new to report on the body, with compact dimensions and a style inspired by the Alfa 33 Stradale racing car.

Interior
Carbon fibre features in an interior that puts the emphasis on the driver. Putting the composite material on view emphasises the lightweight structure underpinning the 4C. The dashboard and door trims are finished with an 'asphalt' treatment - to provide a sense of connection to the road apparently. Digital instruments are used and the flat-bottomed steering wheel carries the gear shift buttons. Alfa says the cockpit is designed to suggest the world of motorcycle racing and race cars.

Mechanicals
The 1750 (1.8-litre) turbo petrol engine develops 240hp thanks to forced induction, variable valve timing, direct fuel injection and specific intake and exhaust systems. It also promises a 'revolutionary scavenging control system' to eliminate turbo lag. Given the quoted 'less than 4kg/hp' power to weight ratio that puts the 4C's weight at no more than 960kg.

Anything else?
Although designed by Alfa Romeo the 4C will be produced at Maserati's factory in Modena. The 4C will also mark the return of the brand to the US market as part of a plan to increase sales around the world.
