Hours after it was crowned the European Car of the Year for 2013, the Volkswagen Golf has spawned a new variant in the Golf Estate. Unveiled at a preview event on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show the estate model will go into production this summer.
Like the Golf MK7 hatchback, the estate version is built on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform meaning it weighs over 100kg less than the car it replaces. Thirty centimetres longer than the hatchback, the estate boasts a 605-litre boot - up 100 litres from the Mk6 - that can be expanded to 1,620 litres with the rear seats collapsed.
The usual array of TSI and TDI engines will be offered in the estate including a 1.6-litre BlueMotion model, which offers 85.6mpg economy and 87g/km emissions.
There's no word yet on official Irish sales of the new Volkswagen Golf Estate.
