Mitsubishi is aiming to spread the appeal of hybrid vehicles with the unveiling of the GR-HEV. The pick-up truck concept has a one-tonne payload, but thanks to the combination of a diesel-electric hybrid system it promises sub-150g/km emissions and the ability to run in full electric mode for limited periods.
Exterior
The GR-HEV takes the styling theme set by the current Mitsubishi L200 and amps it up with the high sides making the load bay appear to continue seamlessly into the dual-cab cockpit. The upswept kink in the window line is exaggerated over the regular car, but it is still immediately identifiable as an L200 - design study for the next model maybe?
Interior
No images or information have been released of the interior but considering the GR-HEV is a hybrid concept we are going to assume it is fitted with all manner of futuristic technology that will not see the light of day.
Mechanicals
Power for the GR-HEV is provided by Mitsubishi's latest 2.5-litre diesel engine that is mated to a front-mounted electric motor. Performance figures have not been announced but it is known that Mitsubishi is aiming for sub-150g/km emissions - a figure it says is 50g/km lower than current pick-ups.
Mitsubishi's Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system sends power to the road via an automatic transmission. This controls power distribution to each corner to boost traction.
Anything else?
The GR-HEV was unveiled alongside the CA-MiEV crossover concept, a supermini sized crossover that tackles some of the criticisms of the i-MiEV city-car.
