The latest Porsche 911 RSR racer will race for six hours straight when it makes its competition debut at Silverstone this weekend. The Type 991 model replaces the 997 and Porsche has high hopes that the new version can continue the 997's success.
The new RSR is certainly imposing to look at. For a kick-off, Porsche has given its new model a special livery that celebrates 50 years of the iconic 911. As well as this, the rear wheelarches have been flared massively, and the gaping hole in the front is designed to provide better cooling than the outgoing 997's nose.
Structurally, the new RSR carries very few aspects forward from the previous model. Porsche says that its main priority with the 991 was a more even weight distribution. As such, the new version has a longer wheelbase, and carbon fibre use is extensive. Furthermore, Porsche has installed a lightweight lithium-ion battery and fitted a new racing gearbox. Even the windows have been on a diet.
All this weight shedding will make the car more responsive; and the power from its 460hp 4.0-litre flat-six engine should be able to be put to better use. To further ensure victory, Porsche has fitted quick release systems to the car's front bumper, bonnet and rear end that should result in much quicker pit stops.
With Porsche's history of being the most successful manufacturer ever at Le Mans, the upcoming six-hour event at Silverstone is expected to end with a positive result.
Timo Bernhard, one of the six 911 drivers at Sunday's event, says, "I felt great at the tests in the 911 RSR. We have a good chance to win our class with this car."
Factory driver, Joerg Bergmeister, as well as predicting success at Silverstone went on to say that the 991 is "the most beautiful and spectacular 911 ever."
Sunday's race will be aired live throughout the day on Eurosport 1 and 2. Viewers can also stream the event live at www.fiawec.com.
