Engine of the Year award results

Ford, Volkswagen, BMW and Ferrari triumph at Engine of the Year awards.

The 2013 International Engine of the Year Awards took place today and four companies taking more than one trophy home. Ford, Volkswagen, BMW and Ferrari each picked up two awards; with other winners coming from Fiat, Audi, Porsche and McLaren.

So, Ford first. The company's turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine has once again taken the International Engine of the Year Award, fending off Volkswagen's 1.4-litre TSI unit, which took second place. The EcoBoost engine also won in the sub 1.0-litre category.

Volkswagen was compensated with the Best New Engine Award with its 1.4-litre TSI ACT unit - although it only achieved fourth place in the 1.0- to 1.4-litre category. This result didn't disappoint Volkswagen too much, however, as the company also took second and third place in that section and its 1.4-litre TSI TwinCharger engine grabbed first.

BMW had the 1.6- to 1.8-litre and the 1.8- to 2.0-litre awards sewn up with two of its four-cylinder offerings. The 1.6-litre turbocharged unit and the 2.0-litre twin-turbo engine both managed to beat entrants from Volkswagen to win their trophies.

The final manufacturer to win more than one award was Ferrari, taking the crown for the Best Performance Engine as well as winning the 4.0-litre and above category with its 6.3-litre V8.

The Green Engine Award was claimed by Fiat for its 875cc TwinAir DNG unit, defeating last year's winner - GM's 1.4-litre range extender - which dropped to sixth place.

Germany called victory on both the 2.0- to 2.5-litre bracket with Audi's 2.5-litre turbocharged engine, and on the 2.5- to 3.0-litre category for Porsche's 2.7-litre DI unit; while McLaren won an award for its 3.8-litre V8 winning the 3.0- to 4.0-litre prize.
