Next-gen Mitsubishis previewed

Could we be looking at the next Mitsubishi Shogun, Outlander and ASX?

Mitsubishi has announced today (October 8) that it will be debuting three new concept cars at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show. They will all sport Mitsubishi's new design language; and they look - from the teaser shots at least - to be viable replacements for existing models in the Mitsubishi range.

First up is the biggest, the Concept GC-PHEV, a full-size SUV that could become the next Pajero. Unlike today's model, however, the GC-PHEV is powered by a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle system. This is then hooked up to Mitsubishi's latest S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) to create a vehicle that has "the dynamic driving ability of an SUV with class-leading environmental performance".

Mitsubishi's PHEV system is seen again in the Concept XR-PHEV that appears to be along similar lines to the existing Outlander model. With a sporty body, this compact SUV is said to have "nimble drivability" as well as producing no emissions along the way.

The final concept to be showcased is the Concept AR MPV - or potentially the next ASX. This model doesn't have plug-in hybrid technology, but instead makes do with smaller, turbocharged, direct-injection engines to continue the green trend that seems to be developing on the Mitsubishi stand at Tokyo. The brand also claims that its interior will feature a new design to make its occupants feel calm and relaxed; as well as having numerous seating positions to keep it as versatile as possible.

Anything else?
The 43rd Tokyo Motor Show 2013 will open its doors to the public on 23rd November with a preview-event taking place on Friday 22nd November.
