Last weekend (September 10-12), the second annual Cannonball Run in aid of Barretstown children's charity took place. A total of 150 supercars participated in the three-day driving event. It all started in a bustling Merrion Square, with send off wishes from Dublin Lord Mayor, Gerry Breen, and a Gardai escort out of the city.
This year's participants included Keith Duffy of Boyzone and Elaine Crowley of TV3 news while Irish racing legend Rosemarie Smith was enjoying the company for the second successive year.
In Killarney, an event hosted by the organisers showed a video of the lives and work at Barretstown. Retired paediatric oncologist, Dr Finn Breathnach, thanked all the Cannonballers for their help with this great cause. To complete the evening, awards for drivers and an auction that raised €25,000 for Barretstown took place.
Sunday morning saw the final leg of the event head for Cork City, where the River Lee was the backdrop for a fireworks display to end the weekend.
In all, it is estimated that the total raised could approach €200,000.
