Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has issued a recall notice for the Caddy Van. It's to do with the ball-pins that attach the gas struts on models with the lift-up rear tailgate. Those pins may have been damaged when they were fitted and, if they fail, could cause the tailgate to drop unexpectedly. It's perhaps not the most serious of recalls, but one which, nonetheless, involves a minor component that could lead to injury.
The recall is worldwide and the solution is simple: take out the old pins and fit new ones. The recall doesn't affect models with side-hinged doors, but will involve a global total of 589,000 Caddys (523 vehicles in Ireland) that were built between November 2003 and January 2013 and are fitted with tailgates.
Customers will be contacted by letter and asked to bring their cars into their local dealer to have the remedial work done.
Anything else?
It's been a bad couple of weeks for recalls, once again. Toyota had to recall millions of Prius worldwide for a software defect while in the US, General Motors is in the midst of a controversial 1.6 million vehicle recall of various Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5 and Saturn Ion models to fix a faulty ignition system, which has been blamed for several fatal accidents.
