What is it?
The latest in Audi's line of environmentally conscious performance concept cars. The e-tron Spyder takes the formula of the e-tron coupé and chops off the roof. The result is an extraordinarily desirable way to drive and save the environment. The e-tron Spyder's 3.0-litre turbodiesel is boosted by a pair of electric motors on the front axle. That, and Audi's lightweight ASF aluminium space frame construction, allows the e-tron Spyder the potential to use only 2.2 litres/100km (128mpg).
Why's it here?
To ensure that Audi has one of the hottest stands at the Paris Motor Show. Along with the quattro concept, the e-tron Spyder debuts Audi's future new look, as well as some potential future new technology. Via plug-in electric power the e-tron Spyder can drive around 50 kilometres with no emissions, yet it's got supercar performance to match its jaw-dropping looks. It'll reach 100km/h in 4.4 seconds and can hit an electronically limited 250km/h.
Show stopper or floor filler?
Even the super-cool Parisians are likely to get hot under the collar when they clap their eyes on this show-stopping concept. Audi's big chiefs are saying it won't be built, though after a few glasses of wine at a pre-show event there were mutterings that it could reach Audi's plate-glass showrooms. Here's hoping.
