Shift yourself in new manual Jag F-Type

New manual gearbox and four-wheel drive options for Jaguar's sports car.

For the first time in more than 30 years, Jaguar is going to fit a manual gearbox to a sports car. Along with a raft of other updates and improvements, Jag's gorgeous F-Type is going to get a new manual transmission option on the two V6-engined models, in 340- and 380hp forms. The gearbox, developed for Jaguar by ZF, is a six-speed unit that uses a number of innovations, including a low-capacity oil system, to save weight and reduce bulk. Jag says that everything about the transmission has been optimised to make it feel good to operate, including the 45mm 'throw' between gears.

There's also a new electrically-assisted power steering system, which Jaguar claims can cut the F-Type's CO2 emissions by up to 4g/km. Indeed, the basic 340hp V6 model with manual transmission now sneaks under the 200g/km barrier. Enthusiasts will be concerned that electrical assistance may mute the brilliant hydraulic steering of the current F-Type, but Jag is at pains to reassure us all that the system has been carefully calibrated to give maximum feel and responsiveness. We'll find out in January when we try it for ourselves.

For those planning to drive their F-Types in winter, or take it on a skiing holiday, there's a four-wheel drive option on the way. Distinguished by a taller central bonnet bulge, the all-wheel drive system is available on the V6S and V8 models, and is still primarily a rear-drive model, only sending engine power forwards when it detects slippage at the back. Likely to be a minority interest model here, it's crucial for Jaguar in key northern US States, the Far East and Alpine areas of Europe.

Finally, there's a new InControl infotainment system with an eight-inch touch screen, replacing the aged touchscreen controller that Jag has persevered with for too long. Featuring new control swipes and drag motions, animated junction readouts for the satnav and full smartphone connectivity, it at last drags Jag's centre console into the current century. There are even nice new dials in the instrument pack to accompany it.

Anything else?
"The F-Type Coupé and Convertible already represent everything you'd expect from a Jaguar sports car - seductive design, stunning performance and amazing agility. The addition of all-wheel drive and manual transmission options to the range will further enhance the F-Type's dynamic capability and offer even greater driver reward - broadening its appeal to sports car enthusiasts worldwide" said Phil Popham, Group Marketing Director, Jaguar Land Rover.
