McLaren is officially going downmarket with its latest sports car. Well, such things are relative of course and while the 570S Coupe will be the most affordable McLaren yet, it's still not exactly going to be a Dacia Sandero rival. Expect prices to hover at around the €300,000 mark for the first of the so-called 'Sports Series' lineup.
Still, that is significantly cheaper than the 570S' bigger brothers, the 650S and the insane P1 and will make the new base McLaren a rival for the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo and Mercedes-AMG GT. As with the 650S and 675LT, the name refers to the power output of the 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine - 570hp, which the 570S shares with the 650S and 675LT. Also on the shared list is the carbon monocell chassis, which McLaren says gives the 570S a unique advantage at this price level over its steel or aluminium rivals.
Will it be enough to push McLaren's production figures over the originally stated-aim of 4,000 cars a year? We'll have to wait and see. All McLaren is saying about the car for now is that "every Sports Series model will share its DNA with the Super Series and Ultimate Series that sit above it in the McLaren hierarchy. A pure McLaren, offering class-leading levels of performance, coupled with optimised handling characteristics and driving dynamics, the 570S Coupé marks the first time McLaren has offered its pioneering and race-derived technologies in the sports car segment."
The Sports Series will get an official debut at the New York International Auto Show in April, but for now watch this brief teaser clip.
