MINI is developing head-up display (HUD) to a whole new level with these funky goggles. The prototype technology, called MINI Augmented Vision, is set for an Auto Shanghai 2015 reveal.
Like HUD, Augmented Vision can display certain data in the driver's line-of-sight, such as vehicle speed, speed limits and so on, but it would go even further if MINI ever decides to put it into production.
It allows the wearer of the glasses to input destinations into the satnav from outside a MINI, transferring them once inside the car, it can do 'first mile/last mile' nav (i.e., from the car's parking place to your ultimate destination on foot). It will also superimpose navigation arrows actually onto the road ahead of you so you know precisely which lane to be in (no more blaming dodgy graphics on a central display screen when you go wrong) and it can even do X-Ray views of parts of the car. No, really, if the wearer looks through the A-pillars or doors, a virtual view of the outside world obscured by such structures is projected into the glasses.
All of this and more besides is achieved using augmented reality glasses, which can show the relevant information without blocking the driver/wearer's direct field of vision. The project manager for MINI Augmented Vision, Dr Jörg Preissinger, said: "Working with several Qualcomm companies, we have created an interlinked system and augmented reality eyewear with a characteristic MINI design that revolutionise the experience both in and outside the vehicle."
Anything else?
Qualcomm should take some credit in this joint escapade as well and so Jay Wright, the company's VP, added: "We are proud to have helped develop a breakthrough augmented reality interface between eyewear and the automobile. MINI Augmented Vision offers a compelling experience for consumers today, and hints at what will be possible tomorrow."
