Nearly 600 Irish Toyotas affected by software glitch that could shut off hybrid system.

Toyota Ireland is recalling 589 Auris Hybrid and Prius models due to a software glitch that could potentially shut down the hybrid system while driving. The move is part of a global recall of some 625,000 vehicles manufactured between May 2010 and November 2014.

The software that currently governs control of the Auris and Prius hybrid system can cause high heat to develop around some transistors and damage them. Ordinarily warning lights on the dashboard would alert drivers to an issue but in some instances, the problem could result in a failure of the hybrid system.

No parts are required to complete this software update for the car's Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

Toyota Ireland will be contacting the owners of all affected vehicles by mail and asking them to take their vehicle to a Toyota dealer. The dealer will arrange to update the software on all involved vehicles. This work will be carried out at no cost to the owner.

For more information you can contact Toyota Ireland directly on 01-419 0222.
