Citroën announces mad Cactus Méhari for Frankfurt

Bonkers Citroën classic meets bonkers current model for concept car.

With the gigantic Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) moving ever closer, the manufacturers are keen to tell us what they'll be bringing to the German party.

Citroën has announced its line-up and in among the usual updates to the existing road-car range is a proper little gem - the French firm is revisiting one of its most oddbod creations, the Méhari, by adapting a C4 Cactus concept on that theme.

For those who don't remember it, the Méhari was a lightweight (520kg) little utility vehicle based on the 2CV and Dyane models, featuring a plastic body and canvas roof. Think of it as a French Mini Moke and you'll be in the right ballpark - and we can't wait to see how Citroën is going to adapt a Cactus to evoke thoughts of the Méhari, as the resulting car should be idiosyncratic to say the least.

Anything else?

Alongside the Cactus Méhari will be the Aircross concept SUV, seen at the Shanghai show earlier this year, additional products for the C4 Cactus and the C1, and the new versions of the C4 range and the Berlingo Multispace. Citroën will also display engine tech and connectivity systems.

Frankfurt IAA runs from September 15-27 this year.
