Nissan has updated its Leaf for 2016 with the introduction of a new 30kWh battery that increases the car's potential driving range to 250km. The new battery will be good news to potential buyers who may have been put off by the limited range.
The battery's performance has been improved by a change to the layout of the cells as well as the introduction of carbon, nitrogen and magnesium to the electrodes. Despite an increase in weight by 21kg the overall dimensions of the battery remain the same as the existing 24kWh unit. All of the existing chargers, both public and private, will be compatible with this new battery.
Commenting on the announcement of the new battery for 2016, Paul Wilcox, Chairman, Nissan Europe, said: "The Leaf, the best-selling EV in the world, just got even better. And up-to 155 miles opens the world of EV to thousands of drivers across Europe who before just weren't completely confident that an EV would work for them. This extra range will make Leaf ownership an easy first choice."
Anything else?
Other changes to the 2016 Nissan Leaf include the choice of a new colour - Bronze - and the introduction of a new user interface and digital radio system via a seven-inch touchscreen. Owners will also be able to remotely monitor the status of their Nissan Leaf via the Carwings smartphone app, which has also come in for some updates including a new look and a simplified activation process.
The Carwings app can also be used to remotely turn on the car's heating system to pre-warm the cabin on those cold winter mornings. Apart from being a nice comfort, the advantage of this means that the car can be heated while it is still plugged into a home charging point so as to not unnecessarily drain the battery when setting off on a journey.
