It's time for us all to pen an open letter to Mazda, which should begin thus: "Please, please, PLEASE make the RX-Vision a production reality."
This gorgeous slice of rotary-engined exotica from Mazda was previewed at the Tokyo Motor Show, and the best news is that it could well be a showroom RX-9 in years to come - Mazda was being coy in its announcements but made some enigmatic comments that suggest this thing could get the green-light.
For instance, its rotary engine - a Mazda hallmark over the ages, culminating in the awesome Renown Mazda 787B being the only rotary motor to win Le Mans, back in 1991 - gets the same nomenclature as the Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-D petrol and diesel lumps; front-mounted and powering the rear wheels, Mazda says the RX-Vision's Skyactiv-R lump is a 'next-generation unit'.
This is where it gets intriguing. In Mazda's release, the company says that 'countless fans of the brand around the world hope it [the RX-Vision] will become a reality'. And it goes on to add that while it is currently not mass-producing any rotary models, R&D activities into the technology have 'never ceased'.
So come on, Mazda - get it into production and, if you can, make it look as glorious as this. We're salivating at the thought.
Anything else?
Mazda's Representative Director, President and CEO Masamichi Kogai said: "Mazda will continue to take on new challenges in an effort to build a special bond with our customers and become their one and only brand."
