Hyundai offers three EVs in Ioniq

Full electric, plug-in hybrid and mild petrol hybrids planned for Hyundai’s all-new Ioniq.

What's the news?

Hyundai is readying a new 'green' car - and the big news is that it will have not one, but three advanced drivetrains.

The Ioniq (Hyundai renders the model name in all capitals but if you'll forgive us, we won't) will debut in Korea in January, before having full debuts at the Geneva and New York motor shows, both of which are held in March 2016.

It will come with the choice of three powerplants: there's a full battery-electric Ioniq, without any sort of combustion engine on board; and then there are a pair of petrol-electric hybrids, one a full plug-in version and the other with just mild electrification. These three are otherwise known as (respectively) the BEV, PHEV and HEV.

All versions of the Ioniq will be based on an all-new, exclusive platform developed by Hyundai especially for its range of powertrains.

Anything else?

Woong-Chul Yang, head of Hyundai's R&D Centre, said: "Hyundai Motor has a heritage of building innovative, fuel-efficient vehicles, so we are proud to advance our eco-friendly car line-up with the introduction of Ioniq. Our vision for future mobility focuses on choice, with a variety of powertrain options to suit customers' varied lifestyles, without compromising on design or driving enjoyment. Ioniq embodies Hyundai Motor's vision to shift the automotive paradigm and future mobility; Ioniq is the fruit of our efforts to become the leader in the global green car market."
