What's the news?
Following on from the reveal of the stunning LC 500 in early January, Lexus has released some details on an upcoming hybrid version of its new flagship coupé, which will become the seventh model in Lexus' ever-growing hybrid range.
Exterior
There are no apparent visual differences to the LC 500, although those of you with telescopic vision may spot the discreet 'h' badge and the Lexus logo up front probably has a dark blue background. The LC's design has already led to EyesOnDesign awards for best interior and best designed production car at the recent Detroit Auto Show. The standard LC 500's 52:48 weight distribution may be altered by the addition of electric hardware however, so it will be interesting to compare the two dynamically when the opportunity arises.
Mechanicals
This is where the real changes occur. Lexus being Lexus, it was only going to be a matter of time before a hybrid powertrain joined the fantastic 2UR-GSE V8 engine slated for use in the regular LC 500. Details are currently vague at best, the official line mentioning a 'next generation hybrid powertrain, the Lexus Multi Stage Hybrid System, providing more performance, enhanced driving pleasure and greater efficiency'. You can be sure that this new technology will find its way on to other hybrid models offered by the premium Japanese manufacturer in due course. Whether this is an evolution of the current Lexus Hybrid Drive system, or a full sea change in hybrid thinking will be unknown until more info is released. The big question must be, how will it compare to the Yamaha tuned 5.0-litre V8 masterpiece? The all-alloy lump stands out as an oddity in today's turbo-mad industry with its titanium inlet valves and electronic variable valve timing actuation - and is all the better for it. There is no word on transmission as yet, but you can bet on CVT technology of some sort taking the place of the 10-speed auto of the LC 500.
Anything else?
Toyota's CEO Akio Toyoda has mentioned the design team's desire to keep as true as possible to the LF-LC concept, along with the promise of 'the most dynamic driving performance since the LFA'. No pressure then. The wraps will be taken off the LC 500h at the Geneva Motor show on March 1st. We'll be there.
