Lamborghini tech previewed

Lamborghini has announced that its Murcielago replacement will feature race-car like pushrod suspension.

Lamborghini sure knows how to keep us in suspense. Short of unveiling any decent pictures of the Murcielago replacement, or even confirming its name, the company has revealed that it will have pushrod suspension.

In a pair of pictures Lamborghini has shown us the pushrod setup of the new car in all its horizontally sprung glory, exposed behind a carbon-covered V12 engine.

Pushrod suspension's main advantage is packaging: by slotting the suspension sideways, the front of the car can be much thinner - more wedge-like. Handling is improved too because it shifts the weight of the suspension components further across to the centre mass of the car. Formula One and other race cars employ the same layout.

The system, which is made entirely of aluminium to keep weight down, has a nose lift feature to ensure speed humps aren't so skirt troubling.

The car is due to be unveiled in full at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and is expected to be the star turn there. Currently, 'Aventador' is the front-runner for the name, though some are betting on 'Jota' too.

Power is from a V12 engine pumping out a whopping 700hp and driving all four wheels, and because Lamborghini is promising extensive carbon fibre and carbon ceramic composite use for the body and interior parts, expect this thing to be epic in its turn of speed.

We'd guess a 0-100km/h sprint time of less than three seconds, with a top speed guaranteed to top 320km/h. The braking specs of the car, also confirmed by Lamborghini in the press release, suggest serious stopping power: 400mm front discs, 380mm rear and six-cylinder callipers.

Oh, and an electronic parking brake. They had to spoil it.
