European Mitsubishi cars unaffected by figure fixing

Only certain models sold in the Asian market are involved in fuel consumption figure fixing.

What's the news?

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has confirmed that none of its vehicles sold in Europe are affected in any way by the recent scandal that saw the company admit to fixing fuel consumption tests to make its cars appear to be more fuel efficient. In an official statement issued today (11th May 2016) MMC states that only models sold in Japan are deemed to have been involved in improper conduct in relation to fuel consumption tests carried out by the company.

The statement goes on to say: "As a result of that reinvestigation and reconfirmation, we hereby confirm that our testing methods and data are proper and in accordance with European regulations, and also proper for EU certificates."

It is also believed that a number of Nissan models sold only in the Asian market are also affected, as Mitsubishi is a manufacturing partner and produced those vehicles for Nissan. The findings dealt a blow to MMC, which saw its share value plummet amid the revelations.

Mitsubishi isn't the first company to be caught publishing fuel consumption figures that were incorrect, in 2012 both Kia and Hyundai were found guilty of overstating fuel economy figures in the United States. Following an investigation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Hyundai Motor Group, which owns both companies, admitted to and apologised for what it called "procedural errors" in its testing and issued compensation to owners. The company also faced a combined penalty of $300 million.
