This is the latest in BMW's line of 'Hommage' concepts - show cars, usually designed for the Villa D'Este concours in Italy, which manage to look both forward and back at the same time, using modern materials and mechanicals to pay tribute to great BMWs of the past.
This latest Hommage is a nod to the classic 2002 Turbo coupe, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. BMW isn't saying anything yet about the concept's technical makeup, but we can assume it's pretty rapid thanks to the BMW M2's raucous 370hp turbo straight-six.
The whole body has been changed to look as if the 2002 never went out of production, but just evolved. There's a new shovel-style nose and a grille with single-frame headlights set into carbon fibre.
More carbon fibre runs around the body, mimicking the chrome strip of classic 2002s and it divides the car into two, horizontally. Above the line is matte-finish paint, while below it is high-gloss. The wheel arches have been extended too, to remind us of the classic 2002 homologation special that needed a wider track and monster wheels for racing.
Those are 20-inch alloy wheels and gold brake callipers too, by the way.
Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW's head of design said that "Exactly 50 years ago, the 02 range kick-started an era of success for BMW. This compact coupe is one of the vehicles which made the brand what it is today. The 2002 sat at the top of the range and was the first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to come with turbo technology. That set the seal on the coupé as a genuine sports car. At the same time, the 2002 turbo was at the technological vanguard of engine development at BMW. The BMW 2002 Hommage is our way of raising a glass to all these achievements."
