Volkswagen will return to the Nürburgring 24-hour race this June with a 440hp Golf.
The Golf24, as it is known, uses a turbocharged 2.5-litre, five-cylinder engine. Along with the substantial power output it develops 540Nm of torque, which drives all four wheels through a six-speed, sequential transmission.
In 2007 the VW factory entered a 300hp, front-wheel drive Scirocco24, which finished eighth overall. However a new approach was thought necessary to remain competitive.
Volkswagen has already tested the Golf24 at Portugal's Portimao circuit and at Vallelunga in Italy. As well as the 24-hour race Volkswagen will enter three more endurance races at the Nürburgring.
The 2011 event takes place between 23 and 26 June.
