What's the news?
A survey, carried out by AIG Insurance, claims that two thirds of people want to see more Garda Traffic patrols to boost road safety.
74 per cent of people feel that the condition of roads in the country directly contribute to accidents and deaths, while 60 per cent say that the government should do more to improve safety. More than half say that they regularly see other drivers using hand-held devices behind the wheel.
The AIG Road Safety Report, which involved the questioning of 1,000 people, also showed that while 25 per cent of male respondents feel that there is a sufficient number of Gardai on the roads, only 16 per cent of female drivers do.
On the upside, 71 per cent said that they "rarely see passengers not wearing their seatbelt" which is at least a positive sign.
Commenting on the research, Aidan Connaughton, Head of Consumer Insurance, AIG Ireland said: "The findings of our research offer a fascinating insight into Irish motorists' behaviour and we hope that this will help to raise awareness around some of the issues we face on our roads. While it's somewhat reassuring that our research shows that 80% of Irish drivers feel we need to take more responsibility on the roads, the reality is there are still too many road fatalities and there is still work to be done.
"AIG is committed to promoting safe driving and we have brought innovation and new technology to the market through our telematics offering to reward good driving behaviour and encourage safe driving.
